Rahhat Shah Kazmi’s present-day adaptation is set in contemporary Bombay, based on Manto’s celebrated book “Bombay Stories.” Set against the backdrop of 1930s Bombay, *Bombay Stories* follows three of Manto’s acclaimed stories—Khusiya, Saugandhi and Bu—and an additional story that links all three. The film primarily focuses on sex workers and underprivileged women in society. Through a narrative voice blending realism, sharp satire, and magical realism, the film portrays the vulnerable inner worlds of those pushed to the margins of society. The work exposes the hypocrisy, exploitation, and deep-seated prejudices that society imposes upon women. Infused with a nostalgic and poetic atmosphere, Bombay Stories raises profound questions about human dignity, the yearning for freedom, and the fundamental right to exist.
